About IW Trailblazers
The Trailblazers Program is designed to empower underrepresented students to gain confidence that will support them with navigating institutionalized oppression. IW Trailblazers introduces youth to social justice awareness. We believe youth-voice is essential. Youth will have the opportunity to explore methods for liberation- methods that will relieve them from a pre-determined trajectory, while cultivating leaders. Youth will learn self-advocacy and gain a positive self-image. Youth who participate in the IW Trailblazers program will engage in personal development practices that will increase academic performance, goal setting, and accomplishing personal and academic goals. Empowering Youth (Collaboration and empowerment) Mini consultants for teachers!
Students will have the opportunity to share their experiences in the classroom. They will express what makes them feel valued, happy, angry, sad etc. They will express their likes and dislikes. They will express how educators make them feel. Then together, IW staff and students will create a presentation for educators that highlight what is working and what needs to be readjusted to ensure successful outcomes for students. The Trailblazers Mini Consultants will learn how to self-advocate in a healthy productive way. They will learn communication skills and how to deliver a message to educators when they are upset.
Trailblazers Mentor Program (Collaboration and empowerment)
The Trailblazers mentoring program will give Trailblazer students the opportunity to be mentored by Y-Scholar Garfield High School (GHS) students. The Y-Scholars program is an academic college readiness program for African descent students. The Trailblazers mentoring program is a way to build a greater sense of community and belonging. IW Trailblazer’s goal is to empower youth of color to blaze the trail for others to follow and make a difference in life. Being a leader is an essential component of being successful. This program will provide GHS Scholars the opportunity to be a leader while being a role model for Trailblazer students. The Trailblazer students will have the opportunity to experience being motivated by mentors, receiving a role model, and it will also enhance their self-esteem. Students would have the opportunity to explore college campuses with their high school mentor and more……..
